The module ISM512 – International Ship Management provides a comprehensive examination of ship management principles and their application within the commercial shipping industry. Designed to equip students with a deep understanding of the unique management functions related to ship operations, this module explores the complex network of relationships among industry stakeholders and the diverse internal and external factors that impact ship management decisions. Topics include ship management functions, the decision-making process behind outsourcing, ship registration, the role of classification societies, and the critical influence of safety and environmental regulations. Through these topics, students will gain insights into the foundations of successful ship-owning and management practices.

In addition to core management concepts, the module places significant emphasis on performance measurement, operational efficiency, and ethical considerations in ship management. Students will learn to evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess ship management activities, analyse different ship management contracts, and critically assess ethical, economic, and environmental implications of various practices. Practical applications include problem-solving in real-world scenarios, effective crew and green performance management, and the development of innovative strategies to address industry challenges. By the end of the module, students will be well-prepared to apply their knowledge and skills effectively, communicate their findings to diverse stakeholders, and contribute responsibly and strategically within the global maritime industry.
