The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge gained in the Master's Degree Program and complete a research project on their own with the assistance of an advisor. In addition, it provides students with the opportunity to explore in depth a topic of interest by applying a rigorous, systematic, and scientific approach to problem solving.


By the end of both modules (ELP701A and ELP702B), students should be able to:

  1. Implement an original and methodologically valid research plan.
  2. Present and critically analyze their research findings.
  3. Present their research in a complete master thesis form.
  4. Defend their thesis in the presence of an ad hoc, assigned thesis committee.

This is the second Module of the Master Thesis series.

In this Thematic Unit, students will study concepts-definitions of program evaluation, the differences between research and evaluation and theoretical orientations of program evaluation through a historical review. They will, also, study alternative approaches/models that can be used in the evaluation of programs, including program modeling or the technique of structured hierarchical decomposition, the capabilities-weaknesses of these approaches, issues related to resistance and conflict resolution in evaluation, as well as the collection of evaluation information through the design, sampling and costs in relation to the data sources and methods, analysis and interpretation.

The purpose of the Module is to get students acquainted and familiarized with strategic planning in education, as well as be able to apply the relevant theory within the context of educational organisations. Students will study the concepts of organisations and management, needs analysis and the strategic forecasting of the future, as well as the concept of strategy. Students will also study the strategic analysis, both at the level of the external competitive environment of organisations and at the level of their internal environment, as well as the strategic choice, the strategic plan and its implementation. Then, they will examine Total Quality Management (TQM), with reference to the Common Assessment Framework (CAF), will explore responsibility and accountability issues, while the module will be completed with the implementation of strategic planning in the Cyprus Educational System (CES).

The purpose of the Module is to get students acquainted and familiarized with management of change, school effectiveness and school improvement. Students will study the nature of change in modern organisations, the necessity of change and the factors which affect it, the design of change, the individual and change, the school as an organisation and change, change at the educational system level, leadership and change, as well as some innovative programmes in education and international studies. At the same time, they will study the characteristics of the effective school and the effective teacher and the creation of a climate for change, the theoretical models of school effectiveness, the measurement of school effectiveness, as well as the research for the improvement of school effectiveness. Finally, they will examine various research programmes of school effectiveness conducted in Cyprus and internationally.

In this thematic unit students will be introduced to the evaluation of teaching and teachers. They will study the role of inspection/evaluation, issues relating to classroom observation and the methods, procedures and tools that can be used for this purpose, as well as evaluation strategies. They will also examine issues relating to the evaluator, the curriculum, teaching and learning, the assessment of learning outcomes, self-evaluation of teachers and schools and the role of evaluation in the professional development and selection of education officials. Finally, reference will be made to the present and future of the evaluation of teachers’ work.

The purpose of the Module is to familiarize students with the important stages of conducting quantitative research in education as well as to develop their critical ability towards quantitative research results in the field of education.

More specifically, the Module aims:
• to introduce students to basic principles of scientific quantitative research in education
• to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills required to design a scientific quantitative research (specialized research topic, identification of quantitative research questions, methodology design, presentation of results and valid conclusions)
• to support students to understand the ethical issues arising in the design and implementation of a research
• to develop students’ critical thinking over research quantitative results and conclusions

The purpose of the Module ELP511 is to study the basic organizational theories and to examine in depth the new principles of educational management. It also tends to explore the extensions and the applications of these theories in schools, educational organizations and systems. The Module deals with subjects such as historical and theoretical foundations of educational management, the school as an open social system, internal and external factors that influence the structural, cultural, political and human elements of educational models, introduction to leadership theories, and decision-making theories. The students are expected to be able to reflect and be challenged in relation to applications, deep thinking, study and analysis of the current educational issues on educational leadership, management and administration and to search for theoretical as well as practical solutions. More specifically students are expected to:


- Develop a broad understanding of the educational system as a significant sub-system of the social system and to identify the dynamic environment in which an educational organization and system exists.
- Explore and analyze the different models under which educational institutions and their bureaucracies are organized.
- Identify the role of the scientist/professional in educational institutions and system bureaucracies.
- Acquire a broad knowledge on issues such as leadership, organizational climate and decision making processes in educational organizations.
