During the second year of their studies (on full-time enrolment or when at least the prerequisite Thematic Units are completed), students can choose to write a Master’s Thesis. The thesis consists of two modules, ΕΝΔ701Α and ΕΝΔ701Β.

The research subject falls within the topics covered by the Thematic Units of the MA in "Communication and New Journalism ". In order to write a thesis, students should follow the procedure outlined below:

  1. Based on their obligations, research interests and a topic, students discuss with the Academic Coordinator about the thesis. After the finalization of the subject, the Academic Coordinator discusses with adjunct faculty members of the Program to make sure who would be the right person to supervise the thesis.
  1. Submission of the Master's Thesis Topic Statement Form (APKY63) to the member of the Academic or Adjunct Faculty interested in supervising the proposed dissertation.
  1. If APKY63 is accepted by the supervisor, then it must be forwarded to the Academic Coordinator of the Program for final approval, as well as to the Program secretariat.

It should be noted that if all of the above are not completed at least one month before the registrations for the next semester, the student will not be able to enrol in Master’s Thesis and will have to enrol in two of the remaining elective courses of the 3rd semester of studies.

During the first part of the Thesis, the student is required to complete form APKY157. This form serves as an interim progress report of the Thesis, with a length of 5,000-6,000 words, and describes the objectives as finalized in form APKY63, the main points of development of the topic, the evolution of research questions, etc. The form is uploaded on the eclass platform and must be signed by both the student and the Thesis supervisor. The first part of the Thesis is evaluated by the supervisor, with a Pass or Fail.

During the second part of the dissertation, the writing is completed and the dissertation is presented by the student in front of a three-member committee which decides on the final grade of the Master’s Thesis.

Aim of this module is to acquaint students with fundamental concepts, definitions, theories and debates about the contemporary field of communication and information, which are of critical important for both our private and most importantly our public lives. More specifically, the module ΕΝΔ513 aims at helping future professionals of communication and journalism become aware of their latent theories, modify them where needed and become reflective and critical practitioners in the communication arena. The module combines scientific sources from the fields of Communication and Media Theory, the Theory of News Framing/Frames, Storytelling, Media Effects, and the Sociology of New Media, as well as sources relevant to broader epistemological and methodological approaches, and aims to ground strategic thought in classical and contemporary theories, while it also provides functional knowledge for their application as much on the level of analysis, as on the level of design and implementation of applied communication techniques.

Six critical areas of scholarly inquiry and critical debate have been selected to make up this module, and they all reflect the intersection between the field of Communication and the field of Journalism. Communication (conceptualized in terms of its public character) has its own applied areas, which have as a rule economic and business rationality, closely related to the more general field of the Market. To what extent, does the Market and the field of Applied Communication put pressure on contemporary Journalism? What are the mechanisms that require frames to be used as powerful vehicles of meaning-making and reality-construction? How is the public narrative articulated in the context of digital communication, and what critical role does the context of digital media play in the function and the very nature of Journalism? What kind of media and news effects can we observe today and how can we conceptualize them? What are the challenges posed by New Media that directly affect the structure of Journalism and the way it is being practiced? The critical examination and analysis such key questions constitute the six Topics that comprise this module.

  1. Social media, communication and new Journalism: threat or synergy?
  1. Journalistic Ethics and Ethics in the Digital Age

Aim of this module is to guide the students to comprehend how the concept of the "message" is part of the wider functioning of a society. At the same time, this module offers a robust theoretical framework to test the correctness of his/her personal subjective theories regarding the Media and the necessary skills and different approaches. Thus, the student will be able to comprehend the advances of specialized technical and professional skills in journalism and applied communication in the second year of studies, but also to understand the concept of "active citizen" in media literacy. In addition, this module has a strong methodological orientation, providing students with the fundamental qualitative and quantitative tools to proceed with their dissertation, with the ambition that students who complete ENΔ511 and ENΔ512 will have a sound knowledge of the crucial parts of a dissertation or any research project: The process of writing a solid literature review, the formulation of research questions or hypotheses, the methodological tools, and the results.

This module functions as a bridge between the scientific knowledge offered by ΕΝΔ511 and ΕΝΔ521, as well as EΝΔ522 and the development of in-depth knowledge in the fields of applied communication and journalism. This bridging is accomplished by studying the "message", the ways it is constructed, where it aims at and which mechanisms it activates.

The objective of the course is to introduce the students to modern, digital journalism. To prepare them to be able to work with comfort and proficiency in the online environment, ensuring the reliability that characterizes quality journalism.

This optional module goes deeper in what was learnt earlier but also offers new paths of knowledge. This is why it is the most technical of all, offering more ways of training, especially in digital tools. The student will acquire skills in dealing with sound, still images and video and will study all the steps of content digitalization. He/she will also acquire the basics of data journalism and finally will be asked to follow and create a full journalist project applied on the creation of a webpage as well as the online tools and social media tools that accompany it.

Initially, the era of audio-visual information is defined by a multitude of tools that are freely available to producers and consumers of information equally: moving and static images on computers, tablets and cellular phones, sound that is transmitted live or from a source that has been stored creates an environment of increased demands for each journalist who wants to keep up with his time. In the new context, the traditional divisions of roles and professions (for example journalist and photographer) have been overcome, content has to be enriched and renewed constantly (even after posting) and the journalist makes his work accessible from many different media, with each of them having its own operating rules. And, most importantly, require special knowledge and skills.

With the use of printed and electronic material, new media and social networking, in the Module offered in the 2nd year of study the following subjects are developed:

  1. The era of audiovisual information.
  2. Data journalism.
  3. The road map of digitization.
  4. Integrated journalism project.

The Module focuses on:

  • Understanding the need to reconcile different forms of expression to support journalistic research.
  • Understanding the importance of data journalism today to find sources in research journalism.
  • Training in finding different data sources and handling, evaluating and crossing them
  • Managing the data and converting it to journalistic content.
  • Understanding the specificity of digital text and using the tools and applications available to improve the quality of a text.
  • The approach, both from a business and technical point of view, to the production of content, of creating an integrated journalistic project.
