The aim of the Thematic Unit is to connect students in the Programme with companies and organizations in order to gain work experience and develop communication and practical skills.

It is also expected that the Thematic Unit will: foster the acquisition of additional and specialized knowledge regarding the field of interest of each student, strengthen the employment opportunities during the period of study and after graduation, provide students with direct experience of the constant changes and challenges in the professional world, help overcome barriers between theory and practice, and create of a network for students with local agencies.

The Thematic Unit ΛΧΡ611 “Risk Management of Financial Institutions” provides the students who select it with the knowledge and ability to understand decision making by banks and other financial institutions. In particular, it examines the risks these institutions face as brokers in their quest to increase the return on their funds.

Among other things, it studies the measurement of various risks such as interest rate risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, and market risk. It also examines various tools for managing these risks such as capital adequacy, forward contracts, futures, sales of loans and securitisation.

In order to complete the Master's Degree in “Accounting and Finance” it is necessary to develop an Applied Research Project. Developing such Research Project is one of the most creative challenges of the program as it provides the student with the opportunity to demonstrate that he / she has the ability to apply the knowledge gained in the Master's Degree Program and complete a research project on his / her own with the assistance of an Advisor. In addition, it provides the student with the opportunity to explore in depth a topic of interest by applying a rigorous, systematic and scientific approach to problem solving.

This is the second Module of the Applied Research Project series.

The Thematic Unit on Financial Accounting aims to provide students with an understanding of theoretical and applied accounting issues, and is essentially a continuation of the Thematic Unit TXΛ512 Principles of Accounting. In particular, the thematic unit aims to familiarise students with the topics of Financial Accounting, both in theory and in practice. After the student has first learned the basics of accounting (TXΛ512: accounting statements, records, accounting cycle), in this thematic unit he/she will deal with accounting analytics techniques in order to understand the importance of indexes, trend indicators, vertical and horizontal analysis, among other tools. It will thus be able to effectively assess and predict the evolution of the financial and economic course of businesses, banks, and organisations. In particular, the thematic unit emphasizes the study of indices to of liquidity, activity, profitability, capital structure, sustainability, and investment.

The thematic unit also covers the valuation of companies, comparing their book value to their market value. In addition, it presents the sources of business capital (e.g. equity, liabilities). In this context, it delves into the accounting treatment of increases in shareholder’s capital, as well as the accounting treatment of liabilities. It also examines the individual categories of cash flows and their estimation methods. Finally, it presents the financial statements and the corresponding indices for credit institutions.

The objective of the Thematic Unit ΛΧΡ523 is to present the techniques of financial accounting, so that based on it, financial assessments can be made and critical decisions can be taken in the contemporary demanding business environment.

The Thematic Unit “Investment Portfolio Management” aims to introduce students to the fundamental principles of contemporary portfolio management, which essentially relate to 1) an understanding of the basic financial instruments of the money market and in particular the capital market, and 2) an understanding of the basic principles of modern portfolio management theory.

By achieving these two aims, students will be able to analyse the fundamental financial instruments and be able, after evaluating them, to appropriately combine them into an investment portfolio that will deliver the highest expected return given the risk associated.

The Thematic Unit “Corporate Finance” provides the principles of the theory and practice of Financial Management. The unit provides the student with an insight to the environment of business decision-making: how businesses make financial decisions, the investments they must make and how they should pay for these investments.

This thematic unit provides students an analytical framework for understanding the relationship between return and risk, capital structure and the value of the business, as well as valuating investments and businesses, which is a core function of corporate and investment banking.
