Online talk: “Research ethics in social sciences – main issues and concerns”

The Postgraduate Programme in Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning of the Open University of Cyprus will host Dr. Tomasz Zarębski, Associate Professor at the University of Lower Silesia (Poland), for a staff teaching programme in the context of the Erasmus+ Programme. In the context of his mobility, Dr. Zarębski will deliver two (2) online lectures open to the general public.

The first online talk is entitled “Research ethics in social sciences – main issues and concerns” and it will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 19.00 – 21.00 EEST. Web link for live streaming: https://bit.ly/3ED6ltJ

The lecture will be an introduction to the problems concerning research ethics in social sciences. Dr. Zarębski will discuss five kinds of risk that are in at stake when conducting empirical research (physical, legal, social, financial, psychological) as well as some main strategies of minimizing risks (anonymization, confidence, obtaining informed consent etc.). He will also discuss some exemplary cases of breaking ethical rules.

Tomasz Zarębski is an Associate Professor at the University of Lower Silesia, Wrocław, Poland, and the Editor-in Chief of the journal INSTEAD: Interdisciplinary Studies in Education & Society (Teraźniejszość – Człowiek – Edukacja). He earned his academic degrees (MA, PhD) in philosophy at the University of Wrocław. He deals mainly with the philosophy of language and its connection with cognitive sciences, but a part of his research concerns also the theory of argumentation, theory of rationality, pragmatism and neopragmatism. He is also interested in the philosophy of education as well as in interdisciplinary projects on philosophical ideas in children’s literature.
