Virtual Winter School “Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics (FATE) in Artificial Intelligence” organized by CyCAT hosted at the OUC

Aiming to cover topics related to Artificial Intelligence and to promote the multidisciplinarity of Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics, the Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency (CyCAT), hosted at the Open University of Cyprus, organises the “Winter School: Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics (FATE) in AI”. CyCAT's FATE in AI Winter School will be taking place online between 11-15 January 2021.

The Winter School primarily targets postgraduate students at Masters and PhD levels, and early career postdoctoral researchers in the following disciplines or related ones: Human Computer Interaction, Data Science, Information Systems, Cognitive Systems, Computer Science.

Prof. Joanna Bryson (Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, Germany) and Casey Dugan (Manager of the AI Experience Lab, IBM Research, Cambridge Research Center, MA USA) will offer keynote talks. Academics and researchers from Universities participating in CyCAT but not exclusively, i.e. the Open University of Cyprus, the University of Sheffield, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Trento and the University of Haifa, aim to offer new insights and to expose participants to the issues of FATE in AI from different angles e.g. from the developer’s point of view, or that of the data scientist, user interface and interaction designer etc., as well as the ethical implications of their decisions when designing, developing, or auditing an AI system or tool. This will provide the participants the opportunity to have a more holistic idea of where biases might occur during the process of developing an intelligent system and deploying it for use. The knowledge participants  gain will be demonstrated through hands-on activities and potential synergies in the projects they will be working on, during and after the Winter School.
