The purpose of this Thematic Unit is to examine the structure of Administrative Law and the basic principles that govern it. It begins with the study of the establishment of the Supreme Constitutional Court and its subsequent unification with the Supreme Court due to the law of necessity, while analyzing the course of administrative law to date, and concludes with the establishment of the Administrative Court. The case law of the Supreme Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court and the Administrative Court is examined in this regard under Article 146 of the Constitution (constitutional regulation introducing the administrative appeal in the Cypriot legal system). The Administrative Act and its meaning are then examined, its distinction into individual and regulatory, as well as its other distinction into simple and complex under Article 146 of the Constitution. Next, the legal interest is considered, the deadline as defined in Article 146 of the Constitution and various other issues of the nature of the contested act (preliminary rulings). Next follows an analysis of the Law on the General Principles of Administrative Law, i.e. Law 158 (I) / 1999, and in particular some basic principles defined in it such as: the principle of legality, the principle of proportionality, the principle of equality, the principle of good administration, the principle of impartiality of the administration and the principle of good faith. In addition, extensive reference is made to the appeal process.

The purpose of this Thematic Unit is the understanding of Cypriot contract law. The T.U.. begins with the study of the general principles of Cypriot contract law with emphasis on the constitutional protection of the freedom of contract. The fundamental principles governing the validity of contract are also examined. The concept of agreement (proposal, acceptance, and revocation of proposal or acceptance) is analysed. Then, additional issues regarding the validity of the contract are investigated, such as the legal capacity of the parties, the existence of certainty, the legality of the contract, the contractual intend, and, finally, the thorny issue of consideration and estoppel. Next, the rules for the construction of the contract are analysed, with emphasis on the distinction between term and representation, the classification of implied terms, and the distinction between terms and conditions. In addition, there is extensive reference to the issue of incorporation and protection against abusive clauses. Further, the categories of defects of the agreement are presented: misrepresentation, undue influence, duress and common mistake. Then, issues of execution of the contract are examined (when time is of the essence or not, partial execution, non-execution and frustration of contract). Finally, the principles governing compensation in case of breach of contract are proposed.

Purpose of the Thematic Unit is the understanding of the Cypriot Constitution and the fundamental principles of Constitutional Law that govern the Cypriot legal order. The Thematic Unit begins with the study of Constitutional Law as a branch of Legal Science and analyzes the parameters of constitutional theory as well as the concepts and functions of the Constitution. The fundamental principles and sources of Cypriot Constitutional Law are also examined, in the context of the multiplicity of the Cypriot legal system, as well as the Cypriot constitutional history, which are an important interpretive tool for the character and parameters that govern, in particular, the Constitution. The essential provisions of the Constitution and the Cypriot state, the institutions of the Cypriot state as well as the tripartite separation of powers in the legal order of the Republic of Cyprus are also investigated. The role and the responsibilities of the Independent Officials are analyzed, while special emphasis is given to the issue of the analysis of the Law of Necessity and its role that plays in the Cypriot legal order. In addition, extensive reference is made to the issue of fundamental rights and freedoms in the Cypriot constitutional order.

The purpose of this Thematic Unit is to familiarize students with the basic principles of the organization and functioning of the Cypriot legal system and the legal profession in Cyprus. This course starts off with a historical analysis of the Cypriot law before and after independence, the hierarchy of laws in the Cypriot legal system as well as the hybridity that characterizes the Cypriot legal system up to now. Then, this unit proceeds to the analysis of the structure and organization of the Cypriot legal system and in particular of the Cypriot judicial system, focusing on the jurisdiction and powers of both the Supreme Court and the First Instance Courts operating in Cyprus. Later on, the legal profession is examined. Specifically, this unit introduces students to the legal framework concerning the professional activity of lawyers in Cyprus.

The purpose of this Thematic Unit is to set, methodically, the students’ LAW on solid foundations, understanding fundamental concepts and acquiring the requisite relevant skills. Beginning, the students, utilising their knowledge background, will become familiar with fundamental concepts, such as the Law, differentiating them from (ostensibly) similar ones; and will be taught, always in relation to the Cypriot and Greek legal order, the sources of law, the legal systems and the ways they operate, as well as the Rule of Law and the principles it comprises. Continuing and proceeding to specifics, the basic characteristics and the operation of the branches and sub- branches of the law will be analysed, focusing particularly on the European Convention on Human Rights and the unique legal phenomenon that is the European Union. Ensuing, the different types and methods of legal interpretation, the application and implementation of legal rules by the Administration and the Courts, as well as the structuring of legal reasoning shall be explained, as they take place in Cyprus (primarily) and Greece (secondarily). Availing themselves of the above, the students will be called to develop legal skills, during the final third of the Module. Specifically, they will be taught initially how to locate resources, both electronic and print, relating to legislation, case law and legal literature; as well as how to evaluate them. Continuing and proceeding gradually from gaining legal knowledge to utilising and expressing it, we shall deal with writing legal documents.
