The purpose of this Thematic Unit is to familiarize students with the basic principles of the organization and functioning of the Cypriot legal system and the legal profession in Cyprus. This course starts off with a historical analysis of the Cypriot law before and after independence, the hierarchy of laws in the Cypriot legal system as well as the hybridity that characterizes the Cypriot legal system up to now. Then, this unit proceeds to the analysis of the structure and organization of the Cypriot legal system and in particular of the Cypriot judicial system, focusing on the jurisdiction and powers of both the Supreme Court and the First Instance Courts operating in Cyprus. Later on, the legal profession is examined. Specifically, this unit introduces students to the legal framework concerning the professional activity of lawyers in Cyprus.
