The aim of the module is to provide a systematic framework of principles, objectives and methods for teaching literature in Education. In particular, it focuses on reviewing and redefining the content and methods of literature courses based on objectives as defined in curricula, contemporary trends in teaching literature (cultural approaches, critical literacy, visual literacy, multimodality, ICT and literature), the contribution of literary theory to literary literacies (perspectives and limitations arising from the study of the literary text through the lense of particular theoretical approaches). For these purposes, the module focuses on: (a) basic concepts of literary theory, in order to understand different approaches to the literary phenomenon, (b) the relation between literature and education as institutions, (c) the formation of the Modern Greek literary canon, (d) ways of organising a literature course and teaching approaches to literary genres, (e) critical literacy and literature. Upon completion of the module, students will have developed in-depth knowledge and comprehension of contemporary trends in teaching literature and fostering literary literacies. Students will also be able to use insights from this Module to design and organise their teaching of literature courses, on both a theoretical and a practical level.
