The Module ΠΙΘ613 “Theory of Argumentation – Logic and Rhetoric” is one of the two elective Modules of the third semester of the MA "PNYX: Political History, Theory and Practice". The aim of Module ΠΙΘ613 is to provide participants with the tools to understand not only the foundations of a "persuasive" argumentation but also how this can be expressed in the form of a public speech. The driving force will be the structure, the identification and the reconstruction of arguments as well as the study of rhetoric as the “technê” of public speaking. Arguments are everywhere, but this doesn't mean that everything is an argument. Thus, the types of arguments will be studied, at a theoretical and practical level, while at the same time their evaluation in the context of various situations of our daily lives will be the main focus of our course. Public discourse includes arguments; a good argument guides reason, whether or not it appeals to emotion. The “technê” of Logic and the Science of Logic govern all the important aspects of our everyday speech. In addition, the Module will highlight issues of ethical and political dimensions of the communicative discourse. For this purpose, examples of public speeches will be studied, in order to examine the pillars that influence an effective speech.

  • Part 1: Ancient Rhetoric, History of Logic, History of Rhetoric: Sophists, Plato.
  • Part 2: Ancient Rhetoric: Aristotle, Stoicism, Ancient Rome, Cicero.
  • Part 3: Logic and the Role of Arguments, Argument Evaluation, Language as an efficient means of communication.
  • Part 4: Rhetoric today, Public Discourse, Political Discourse

The Module ΠΙΘ611 “Law and Political Institutions” is one of the two elective Modules of the third semester of the MA "PNYX: Political History, Theory and Practice". Its aim is to offer a general and thorough view to the most constituent branches of modern law that concern the modern organization and functioning of the state, presenting, at the same time, the legal framework that derives from both European Union Law and Public International Law. This interaction, in particular, takes place through the study of the foundations of the modern state, both at a theoretical and organizational level, alongside the issue of the protection of man as a citizen within the modern state and the administrative institutions that surround it. At the center of the philosophy of the Module is thus the interconnectedness of the citizen within the modern state, the protection of the rights of people as citizens within it and the position of both European and international society towards this broad issue. The students of the Module are firstly invited to understand the elements that make up modern Public Law, by quoting and analyzing the elements of the state, its organizational and administrative structure as well as the principles applied by the state itself for the effective protection of fundamental human rights. In addition to these, the Module focuses on the theoretical and practical approaches drawn from the fields of Political Science and Comparative Law. Subsequently, it presents the modern elements of the organization of the state and the protection of citizens' rights on the level and principles of both the Law of the European Union and the Law of the International Society, in other words the Public International Law. Furthermore, the Module examines the policy implementation of the organizations that are placed under the umbrella of the European Union and the International Society as well as the ways in which the afore-mentioned organizations collaborate with the national state.

The Module is divided into four Subunits-Parts:

  • 1st Part: Elements of Public Law and Policy
  • 2nd Part: Elements of Political Science and Comparative Law: Theory and Practice
  • 3rd Part: Elements of Public International Law, International Policy and International Organizations
  • 4th Part: Elements of European Union Law and European Policy
  • Κωδικός / Course Code: ΠΙΘ522

The Module ΠΙΘ522 “Aspects of European and World History” is one of the two required Modules of the second semester of the first year of the MA "PNYX: Political History, Theory and Practice". The aim of the Module ΠΙΘ522 is to acquaint students with selected subjects of modern European and international history. In this context, the course ΠΙΘ522 is not a conventional modern history course. Rather, it aims to emphasize those historical aspects that are related to present developments, paving the way for a comprehensive understanding of current politics. A good knowledge of certain important chapters of European and international history is a critical stepping-stone for an active engagement with modern politics. The reason is that Cyprus and Greece are part of a complex international environment, which exerts great influence upon them in almost every aspect. The comprehensive study of certain crucial aspects of European and world history is also a necessary prerequisite for a proper understanding of the international relations and interconnections. In this context, systematic knowledge especially in relation to major global conflicts and their historical development is equally essential. The opportunity to conduct research and bibliographic study in historical topics such as the political ideologies, the Cold War, the challenge of European integration and certain major international disputes, such as the Palestinian Question, significantly broadens the horizons of political knowledge. In addition, it paves the way for the students to positively contribute to current political debates regarding the position of Cyprus and Greece in the international system.

The Module ΠΙΘ522 is divided in four Parts:

  • 1st Part: Political ideologies, nations and nationalism
  • 2nd Part: The Cold War and the Greek Civil War
  • 3rd Part: The path to European Union and the European institutions
  • 4th Part: Decolonisation and the Arab–Israeli Dispute
  • Κωδικός / Course Code: ΠΙΘ521
  • ECTS: 15
  • Τρόποι Αξιολόγησης / Assessment: 2 Assignments (30%), Interactive activities (10%), Final exam (60%)
  • Διάρκεια Φοίτησης/ Length of Study: Εξαμηνιαία (εαρινό)/ Semi-annual (spring)

The Module ΠΙΘ521 “Aspects of Greek and Cypriot History” is one of the two required Modules of the second semester of the first year of the MA "PNYX: Political History, Theory and Practice". The aim of the Module ΠΙΘ521 is to acquaint students with selected aspects of Greek and Cypriot history, with a special focus in the realms of political history and foreign policy of the last two centuries. In this context, the course ΠΙΘ521 is not a conventional modern history course. Rather, it aims to emphasize those historical aspects that are related to present developments. A comprehensive understanding of such historical aspects influences current politics, taking into account that deep knowledge of specific historical developments is a fundamental prerequisite of any constructive involvement in the political life of Greece and the Republic of Cyprus. A learned study of specific and critical dimensions of the political history of the two countries in the last two centuries comprises an indisputable condition for the comprehension of the current political situation. Also, equally critical is the systematic study regarding questions on the nature and historical development of essential foreign policy aspects, which explain the present status and action of Greece and Cyprus in the difficult geopolitical environment of the Eastern Mediterranean. The capability that the course offers to delve into the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus Question, particular topics that are used to reconstruct the chronological order, leads not only to a comprehensive understanding of those issues, but also to the adoption of a responsible political stance, regardless of how this stance is expressed or will be expressed in the future (i.e. through active political participation, press or digital media writing, other forms of public involvement etc.).

The Course ΠΙΘ521 is divided into four Parts:

  • 1st Part: The historical background of Greek-Turkish relations, from the Fall of Constantinople (1453) to the Asia Minor Catastrophe (1922). The Greek-Turkish relations from the Treaty of Lausanne to the end of the Second World War (1923-1945)
  • 2nd Part: The Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus Question Ι (1945-1959)
  • 3rd Part: The Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus Question ΙΙ (1960-1974)
  • 4th Part: The Greek-Turkish relations and the Aegean dispute (1974-end of the 20th century)
  • Κωδικός / Course Code: ΠΙΘ512
  • ECTS: 15
  • Τρόποι Αξιολόγησης / Assessment: 2 Assignments (30%), Interactive activities (10%), Final exam (60%)

The Module ΠΙΘ512: Social and Historical Theory is one of the two required Modules of the first semester in the first year of the Master’s Programme “PNYX: Political History, Theory and Practice”. Its aim is to effectively acquaint students with certain aspects of social and historical theory. The Module’s initial goal is to highlight the very basic nature of politics as an engagement with human society. Students are encouraged to realize that in the 21st century the political engagement with social problems and conditions should not be just an empiricist undertaking, but a scientifically well informed pursuit. For this reason, a serious involvement in politics requires a sound expertise in the theoretical study of societies and in the different views on the ways societies function, evolve and change. For this purpose the Module focuses on certain theoretical schools of thought in the fields of social anthropology, sociology, history and archaeology, which deal with both past and present societies. At the same time, elements of the different theoretical traditions are related with certain aspects of the current public political debates, in order to highlight the serious problems that can occur when the interest in the social affairs lacks a systematic theoretical background.

The Module ΠΙΘ512 is divided in four Parts:

  • 1st Part: Fundamental concepts of social theory, historical theory and epistemology
  • 2nd Part: Social science-oriented and Marxist historiography
  • 3rd Part: Aspects of archaeological theory
  • 4th Part: Aspects of anthropological theory
  • Κωδικός / Course Code: ΠΙΘ511
  • ECTS: 15
  • Τρόποι Αξιολόγησης / Assessment: 2 Assignments (30%), Interactive activities (10%), Final exam (60%)
  • Διάρκεια Φοίτησης/ Length of Study: Εξαμηνιαία (χειμερινό) / Semi-annual (fall)

The Module ΠΙΘ511 “Political and Economic Theory” is one of the two required Modules of the first semester of the first year of the MA "PNYX: Political History, Theory and Practice". Its aim is to offer a systematic training in the field of political and economic theory. The deep understanding of political and economic theoretical thinking, in their historical dimension, is a necessary condition for the engagement with politics. Cultivating theoretical thinking in the fields of politics and economics will allow students to approach politics in a thorough and constructive way. For this purpose, a representative selection of the most important traditions of political and economic theory from antiquity to the present is made. These theoretical aspects are examined combined with case studies from the past or current political reality, so that the inseparable relationship between theory and (political) practice is constantly highlighted. By delving into selected aspects of theoretical thinking in the fields of politics and economics, students can acquire significant knowledge and shape their own theoretical understanding. At the same time, in the context of the teaching, the interconnections between the various theoretical approaches become clear, while many confusing issues of the political dialogue regarding the exact theoretical content of many popular "-isms" are clarified.

The Module ΠΙΘ511 consists of the Introductory Part and four distinct but interrelated Parts:

  • Introductory Part: Ancient Greek Political and Economic Thought
  • Part 1: Political Thought of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries
  • Part 2: Classical Political Economy and Criticism of Political Economy
  • Part 3: The Neoclassical Political Economy and the Foundation of Economic Science
  • Part 4: Keynesian Economics and Political Thought in the 20th Century
