27.04.2023 | Open lecture: “ChatGPT: Ban it or Bound it?”

Dr. Xiaojun Zhang (张霄军), Assistant Professor at the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (China) and a member of the Professional Conduct Committee of the Association of Computational Linguistics (ACL), is visiting the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) in the context of the Erasmus+ International Mobility Programme. The visiting professor will deliver an open hybrid lecture entitled: ”ChatGPT: Ban it or Bound it?” on Thursday 27 April, 2023 at 18:00 (GMT+2).

The lecture is focused on ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that responds to questions in a detailed and natural way, which is causing a stir in the education world. Because it can write impressive essays, answer almost any question and complete classroom assignments in all subjects, some school officials, worried that it could lead to massive cheating, quickly banned ChatGPT. Yet, that approach does not address the real issue AI programs like ChatGPT introduce. The challenge — and opportunity — for educators is to learn how to use it thoughtfully, ramp up their media literacy curriculum and develop assignments that lead students to turn in original and creative work.

The open talk will be broadcasted live through this weblink: https://bit.ly/3lu4XVL, and it is open to students, researchers, academics, and the general public interested in this “hot” topic.

All interested are welcome for face-to-face participation in the main OUC building at 33 Yiannou Kranidioti Avenue, 2220 Latsia, Nicosia.

Dr. Xiaojun Zhang is also an honorary associate at University of Liverpool (UK), and an adjunct professor of Open University of Cyprus (Joint MSc in Cognitive Systems) and Northwestern Polytechnical University (China). Hiss research interests cover translation technology, natural language processing, and computational cognition, and he is a scientific member of top conferences in natural language processing such as ACL, EMNLP, LREC, and AACL.
