The research work of the Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency (CyCAT) will be presented at the project’s Closing Ceremony to be held under the auspices of the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy

 

The research achievements of the Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency (CyCAT), which is hosted at the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), will be presented on the 1st of December 2021 at the project’s Closing Ceremony, which will be held under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus. 

The Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency was established in 2018 and is hosted at the OUC, which received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Twinning Programme. CyCAT’s international partners are The University of Sheffield and The University of Edinburgh (UK), The University of Haifa (Israel) and The University of Trento (Italy). CyCAT offers significant added value to the research capacity of Cyprus, and its goals are to cultivate a cultural of innovation, to promote digital literacy and to conduct interdisciplinary research to understand the nature of social and cultural prejudices (algorithmic biases) in information access systems. The Center’s research team holds key expertise in the algorithmic processes involved in information access, user interactions with algorithmic systems, user-system interaction, as well as the social and cultural implications of algorithmic processes.

The CyCAT research team based at OUC, along with the project’s international partners, will be presenting the knowledge and the results of their research in the project’s Closing Ceremony, which includes two panels: a) Algorithmic Literacy and Public Oversight, and b) Algorithmic Transparency and its Relationship to Innovation. Panel A participants include Assoc. Prof. Miranda Christou (University of Cyprus), Senior Lecturer Frank Hopfgartner (The University of Sheffield), and Dr. Athena Michaelidou (Director, Cyprus Pedagogical Institute). OUC Professor Michalinos Zembylas will be moderating the panel. Prof. Tsvi Kuflik (The University of Haifa), Prof. Fausto Giunchiglia (The University of Trento), Dr. Christina Orphanidou (Senior Manager, Head of Data and Artificial Intelligence Lab, PwC Cyprus) join the 2nd panel, which will be moderated by Prof. Michael Rovatsos (Deputy Vice Principal of Research, Director of the Bayes Centre, The University of Edinburgh).
