PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The aim of the MA programme in Greek Linguistics and Literature is to capitalize on contemporary linguistics and literary theory for the study of Greek language and literature. The programme is designed for students interested in linguistics, literary theory, cultural studies and educational applications in the teaching of Greek. It is an interdisciplinary programme that combines theoretical and applied linguistics with literary studies and language teaching, providing a dynamic approach which brings together insights from linguistic and literary theory, cultural studies and sociological/anthropological approaches. Moreover, the programme hones skills for effective teaching and develops the complex research skills necessary for further studies.

The programme comprises two tracks: (a) Applied - Educational Linguistics (linguistic structure, language in its social contexts, educational applications and (b) Literature and Literary Literacy (theoretical approaches, literature and cultural studies, educational applications), its trademark being the parallel development of both tracks and the scientific and epistemological dialogue between them, which ensures the coherence and interdisciplinarity of the programme. Thus, the study of the structure of language and linguistic performance in its social contexts, on the basis of theoretical approaches from both theoretical linguistics and Text Linguistics, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis, feeds into and theoretically supports the study of applied linguistics and literacy on the one hand, while also buttressing the theoretically-informed study of literature, the exploration of the relation of literature to its social and cultural contexts and the study of literary literacies.
