Περίληψη διάλεξης:

The reliance on ‘pockets of innovation’ to improve teaching and learning in higher education means that quality teaching and learning is not widespread nor institutionalised. It was for these reasons that the University of the Western Cape (UWC) decided that the best way to transform teaching and learning would be an institutional approach.

Winberg (2011), in her overview of historical approaches to academic staff development in higher education, notes a variety of institutional strategies, ranging from workshops on teaching methods, implementing student-centred pedagogy and curriculum alignment, promoting scholarship of teaching and learning, to a broader institutional view of academic staff development. Although these approaches reveal some broad historical trends in how staff development has been conceptualised in recent times, these are not, of course, discrete or mutually exclusive approaches.

The broader institutional view of academic staff development was important for implementing the Strategic Plan for Teaching and Learning at UWC, with its systemic view of institutions and how strategic planning and infrastructure can be used to support the teaching and learning.

This presentation will show the importance of developing an institutional approach to advancing the teaching and learning project, as well as the potential drawbacks of such an approach by discussing the process that was undertaken at UWC from 2010-2019 to enhance and promote teaching and learning at the institution. Possible guidelines for embarking on such an approach will be incorporated  into the discussion, after the presentation.
