4th Lecture Series in Late Antiquity | Online Talk 26/04/2022: “Marble in ancient Cyprus”

Marble in ancient Cyprus” is the title of the online public talk to be delivered by Dr Demetrios Michaelides, Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, Professor Emeritus at the University of Cyprus, and President Emeritus of the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics, on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 (19:30 EEST).

The lecture is a joint event of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) and the Centre of Natural and Cultural Heritage. It is organised in the context of the 4th Lecture Series in Late Antiquity (“When our world became Christian”), which is organised by the OUC Programme "Studies in Hellenic Culture".

Demetrios Michaelides studied History of Art, and Archaeology at the University of London. He joined the University of Cyprus in 1992 as Associate Professor of Classical Archaeology, and was promoted to Professor in 2000, a position from which he retired in 2014. He was the Director of the University’s Archaeological Research Unit (1996-2014). He has directed excavations at ancient Berenice (Benghazi) in Libya, Otranto in southern Italy and the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome. He directed the excavation of the house of Orpheus, and that of the Four Seasons, as well as the baths of the Triton in Paphos. He also carried out numerous salvage excavations of all periods in Paphos and the district. He has published more than 170 scientific articles, and is the author, editor or co-editor of 20 books. The main fields of his research include Hellenistic and Roman mosaics, opus sectile and wall paintings of the Mediterranean, the history of medicine, ancient Cypriot funerary architecture, the archaeology of Nea Paphos and the topography of Nicosia. He is the Vice President of the "Association international pour l’Etude de la Mosaïque antique” (AIEMA), and President Emeritus of the "International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics" (ICCM). He is the National Delegate in the International Society for the History of Medicine, and is a member of the Board of several national and international foundations and societies. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1988), and in 2015 he was honoured by the President of the Italian Republic with the title of Grande Ufficiale della Stella d’Italia. In 2019, he was one of the 12 elected Founding Members (Archaeology) of the Cypriot Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts.


The Lecture Series, the programme of which is available online, examines various aspects of the period known as Late Antiquity but tends to focus on issues of Christianization, Late Antique Archaeology, and the Eastern Roman Empire. Convenor of the Series is Georgios Deligiannakis, Associate Professor of the BA Programme "Studies in Hellenic Culture". The Series is supported by the Student and Alumni Union of the Programme and the ERMA Bookstore.
