Τhe Open University of Cyprus calls for the protection of public health and the health of the University’s academic community

The Open University of Cyprus (OUC), with a sense of collective responsibility and guided by the will to protect public health -and especially the health of our most vulnerable populations- takes all the necessary measures, according to the instructions of the Republic of Cyprus, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). During its 10th Meeting, which took place on 22/07/2021, the Senate of the University has invited the University Community (prospective and active students, teaching, research and administrative staff) to show confidence in science and the expert scientists and to proceed with the vaccination against COVID-19 with approved vaccines as soon as possible. According to the Rector, Professor Petros Pashiardis, "we have a responsibility to protect not only our personal health, but also the health of our fellow colleagues and families, vulnerable groups, the members of our academic community and society in general." Cooperation with health authorities and trust in scientists are critical factors for individual and collective well-being. "It is up to us to finally leave the pandemic behind us, by proceeding with the vaccination", he noted.

The Open University of Cyprus preserves academic freedom and safeguards its professors and researchers right to research, disseminate their research results and teach their scientific field without obstacles. However, according to the University’s Code of Ethics, the members of the staff of the University must recognize their limits and obligations and certainly separate their personal beliefs from their university activities, so that they do not adversely affect the smooth operation, work, mission and the University’s reputation. In this context, the personal views of OUC Professors express only themselves and in no case the University as a whole. Besides, the official position of the University is the one which has been expressed above, and it is clear that the Open University of Cyprus supports the State’s efforts to vaccinate the whole community.
