OUC and the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts have signed a cooperation agreement for the benefit of the scientific community and the society of Cyprus

A pioneering institution devoted exclusively to open and distance education, the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), and the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, collaborate and unite their common values and visions with the aim of promoting science and culture in our country. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on July 9, 2021, by Professor Petros Pashiardis, Rector of the OUC, and Professor Andreas Demetriou, President of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.

The OUC and the Cyprus Academy seek to strengthen scientific and research cooperation and implement actions of added value, scientific, cultural and social character, aspiring to promote public debate on scientific and cultural issues, as well as support Cyprus’s position in the international scientific community.

According to Professor Petros Pashiardis, it is a great honor for our University that the very first cooperation agreement signed by the Cyprus Academy is with the Open University of Cyprus”. He also noted that: “as a public University, pioneer in our country in offering open and distance education and lifelong learning, we place to the disposal of the Cyprus our expertise, innovative technologies and distance learning infrastructure, as well as our know-how, not only for joint offering of programmes in the fields of science, letters and arts, but also for scientific and cultural actions aimed at promoting the dissemination of science and seeking its interaction with society”.

Referring to the important prospects of this specific collaboration, Professor Andreas Demetriou, stated that:The Academies of Sciences, in their centuries-long history, complete the academic pyramid of a country as institutions of recognition, strengthening, and cultivating excellence in the production of knowledge and culture. The Cyprus Academy aspires to play this role consistently, efficiently, and creatively in our country and looks forward to working closely with the State, the society, the institutions of higher education of science and culture. It is with great pleasure that the cooperation of the Cyprus Academy with the Open University of Cyprus, another public organization, with which we share common visions, will promote joint actions for the promotion of science and culture inside and outside national borders”.

Professor Yannis Manolopoulos, Vice Rector of the Open University of Cyprus, and Christopher Christodoulides, the University’s Director of Administration and Finance, and Maria Papapolyviou on behalf of the Cyprus Academy, attended the signing ceremony.
