PEX112: Introduction to the History of Cyprus
The course aims at introducing students to the history of Cyprus from 1878 to the early 21th century. In particular, the course will explore Cyprus’ development under British rule (1878-1960). Special emphasis will be given on Cyprus’ strategic location at the crossroads between West and East and its importance for British policy towards the island; Greece’s effort to achieve Enosis with Cyprus; the Cypriots’ struggle for self-determination; and the impact of early Cold War developments on US policy response to Greek claims. Finally, the course will concentrate on the history of the Republic of Cyprus from its foundation in 1960 until today. Major topics include the foreign policy of the Cyprus government; the conflict between the two communities; the Turkish invasion and the role of the Great Powers; the attempts to resolve the Cyprus Question; the Exclusive Economic Zone and Cyprus’ new perspectives.
