Uses and Abuses of Culture. Greece 1974-2010 focuses on the Greek cultural milieu after the end of dictatorship in 1974. It approaches characteristic examples of contemporary visual culture that encapsulate the tendencies, desires and attitudes of Greek society. It identifies the pathologies of Greek society, past and present, in relation to the way they affect the perception of the term “culture.” It addresses the participation in cultural events as the outcome of the new social values of distinction, which flourished in conjunction with the notions of traditional Greek identity. A key area of the research centers on the contradictions and conflicts between intrinsic components of Greek cultural identity and its adopted European identity (the latter gradually formulated upon Greece’s entry into the European Community in 1981).
